Every seat elects one MP, but they are not the same size: Malkajgiri has more than sixty times as many electors as Lakshadweep. Raise each constituency by its electors, by how close its race was, or by turnout.

Reserved seats

Who may stand.

SC and ST constituencies

Articles 330 and 332 of the Constitution reserve seats for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in proportion to their population. Since the 2008 delimitation the Lok Sabha has 84 SC and 47 ST seats (this snapshot: 84 SC, 47 ST). Only SC or ST candidates may contest a reserved seat, but every voter in the constituency votes.

Why seat counts don't move

Each state's number of Lok Sabha seats is fixed on the 1971 census (Article 82, extended by the 84th Amendment) until after the first census taken after 2026. Boundaries inside each state were last redrawn in 2008 using 2001 census figures.

Assembly constituencies

Every state, plus Delhi, Puducherry and Jammu & Kashmir, also elects a legislative assembly. A Lok Sabha constituency usually contains about seven assembly constituencies. Switch to Assemblies to see each state's latest assembly election, seat by seat.
