✶ Structure

Who governs,
and who chose them.

Power in the United States is split twice: across three federal branches, and between the federal government and fifty states — which in turn delegate to counties, cities, school boards and special districts. Each office has its own road to power.

I

Article I · U.S. Constitution

Legislative

Writes the laws, sets taxes and spending, declares war, confirms appointments, and can impeach and remove officials.

U.S. Senator

On the 2026 ballot
Seats
100 · two per state
Term
6 years, staggered — one third elected every two years
Chosen by
Voters of the whole state
How
Statewide popular vote (17th Amendment, 1913). Before that, state legislatures chose senators. Vacancies are usually filled by governor appointment until a special election.

U.S. Representative

On the 2026 ballot
Seats
435 voting · 6 non-voting delegates
Term
2 years — every seat, every even year
Chosen by
Voters of one congressional district
How
Seats are apportioned to states by population after each census; state legislatures (or commissions) draw the district lines. Most states use plurality vote; Maine and Alaska use ranked choice; Georgia and Louisiana can require runoffs.
