Provinces, islands
and 8,132 towns.
- 50 Provinces, plus the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. Each is governed by a diputación provincial, whose members are chosen indirectly from among the municipal councillors elected in the province (LOREG, Title V). Single-province communities, such as Madrid or Murcia, have no separate diputación.
- 11 Island councils: the seven Canarian cabildos (elected under LOREG Title IV) and the four Balearic consells insulars govern each island.
- 8,132 Municipalities (INE register). Councils are elected every four years on the fourth Sunday of May (LOREG art. 42.3) — next on 23 May 2027.
- 66,976 Councillors elected on 28 May 2023, the PP winning 23,442 and the PSOE 20,790 (English Wikipedia's tally of the official results; not checked against the BOE's per-province series).
Municipal results are published in the BOE as per-province PDF resolutions (e.g. BOE-A-2023-19490); turning them into a dataset is planned for the May 2027 elections (docs/spain/PLAN.md, phase 4).
